Severe flooding has struck Nepal's Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, leaving hundreds dead and many more missing. The disaster was caused by an avalanche triggering a sudden surge of water to sweep through villages with little warning.
The flooding has also caused extensive damage to homes and critical infrastructure, while the risk of further flooding remains high.

Caritas Nepal is the local Caritas organisation in Nepal and, like CAFOD, is part of the global Catholic Church network. They are assessing and coordinating their response with local authorities.
The immediate priorities are search and rescue, evacuation, emergency health care, aid distribution and restoring critical services.
Caritas Nepal have already dispatched food to provide meals for 300 families for 15 days. This response will be expanded as assessment continues and more areas become accessible.
